Veterinary Emergency Group has one mission: help people and their pets when they need it most. VEG is a fast-growing group of hospitals that has completely overhauled pet emergency and urgent care with a progressive and client-centered approach, rapid response times, and a highly-focused emergency-only team.
Our Externship Program gives students intensive hands-on emergency medicine experience and the chance to work alongside skilled emergency doctors. Students will focus on learning how to communicate effectively with our clients, diagnose a variety of emergency conditions, develop emergency treatment plans, and collaborate with support staff in a fast-paced environment.
Accepting students currently enrolled in 3rd or 4th year DVM program at an AVMA accredited university.
Our externship gives you the advantage of:
- Flexibility: You can choose how long your externship is going to be.
- Location: Our group of VEG practices is rapidly growing, which means you have multiple locations to choose from
- Mentorship: You’ll get to partner with a senior ER doctor for the duration of your externship
- Focus: Emergency medicine is all we do—so you’ll be fully immersed in what that truly entails
- Housing: Housing assistance is available to students on an as-needed basis. More information on the requirements to qualify for housing and how to apply for it can be found on the externship application.

If you would like to complete an externship between the months of July 2022 - December 2022 please submit an application before the deadline of May 1, 2022.
Are the externships paid?
VEG externships are not paid experiences. VEG externships provide one on one hands-on learning experiences to students, you can’t put a price on knowledge!
How long can I do an externship?
VEG externships can be anywhere from 1-2 weeks in length. VEG recognizes that some externships will need to be longer; these externships are available on a limited first come first serve basis.
What year of vet school am I able to do an externship?
Currently externships are available to 3rd and 4th year students as well as 2nd year students in July after they have completed their 2nd year of school.
Can I do an externship between multiple VEG locations?
We require that students completing externships with VEG be fully vaccinated as well as receive a negative COVID test 48 hours before entering a VEG hospital. At this time VEG is not allowing students to complete an externship between multiple locations to lower the risk for not only the students but staff within our hospitals as well.
If you are interested in completing another externship with VEG, we allow students to complete up to 2 externships with VEG.

“I had an amazing time at VEG Fort Worth! The doctors at Fort Worth included me in all of their cases; discussed physical exams and treatment plans with me on both hospitalized patients and on new cases. I participated in numerous procedures where they allowed me to perform suturing, as well as allowed me to assist them in surgeries. The techs at VEG Fort Worth were also very welcoming and helped teach me new and helpful technical skills.”
