start your vet med career
VETERINARY ASSISTANTS
Becoming a veterinary assistant at VEG is a powerhouse role, as it leads to amazing experiences and career opportunities. You’re on the frontlines, performing basic to intermediate care tasks alongside highly-skilled ER vets and vet nurses. You’ll administer and understand the effects of medications and your day can run from collecting samples to running diagnostic testing to placing a catheter tube, under supervision. You’ll feel valued as you immerse yourself into a role that contributes to the emergency care process and customer experience. Some highlights include:
-
Participating in the triage of incoming patients
-
Being an active participant in patient rounds to ensure continuity of care
-
Training for RECOVER certification to perform proper, life-saving CPR
-
Providing a comforting presence as you monitor patient progress
The VEG Veterinary Assistant is a position where you can learn and grow within an exciting, unique ER environment. At VEG, we do things the VEG Way, creating an exceptional customer experience that works for our staff (VEGgies!) too. As you learn and grow into your role, there are pathways to level up in, such as becoming a veterinary nurse supervisor or earning credentials and becoming a VEG veterinary nurse, trainer, and leader. You’ll thrive among encouraging staff and carry that positive VEG attitude with you wherever you go!

VEG SCRIBES
We’ve broken the mold with VEG scribes, a first-of-its-kind vet med role that offers first-hand emergency experience and the chance to partner with our doctors. Scribes capture the patient’s case in the perfect medical record, translating lay language into medical terms, as well as recording the meaningful moments of the case. Scribes make it possible for doctors to focus on communicating with customers and patients and aid in maintaining efficient workflows.
Being a scribe is a unique opportunity, especially for pre-vet students. As a scribe, you’ll:
-
Get the full ER experience
-
Observer interesting cases from start to finish
-
Collaborate effectively with the medical team
-
Work up to 3-4 12-hour shifts per week, providing a balance you can comfortably live with
Scribing is a fulfilling experience, and many of our scribes go on to enroll in technician and veterinary school programs. The scribe role is a chance to launch your career in veterinary emergency medicine, gain clinical knowledge, and see patients through the eyes of the veterinarian.

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE COORDINATOR (CEC)
-
Anticipate and fulfill customer needs
When customers come to VEG, they’re going through something difficult with their pets, so the job of a CEC is to give them an amazing experience, despite their not-so-amazing circumstances. It’s one of our most important hospital roles, filled by special people who are not only kind and welcoming, but also have the gift of knowing what people need when they’re dealing with worry and stress—whether it’s listening with an empathetic ear or calmly and thoughtfully bringing reassurance that their pets are in the best hands.
You know when you’re at a restaurant, and your server refills your water, even before you ask? CECs should have this mentality with everything they do. This can mean anything from having snacks and drinks at the ready to working with your fellow VEGgies to ensure we’re giving each customer the true VEG experience. This role is perfect for anyone NOT looking for a desk job, as you’ll be continuously circulating the hospital, using your expertise to:
-
Anticipate and fulfill customer needs
-
Keep workflow on track with full oversight of the customer’s experience
-
Remain upbeat or comforting, and know when each is appropriate
-
Communicate with empathy and reassurance
-
Be the first point of contact, and ensuring customers see a doctor right away
-
Help customers with financial decisions
-
Following up with referring veterinarians, expediting case records, and sharing any concerns to ensure absolutely seamless patient care
-
Do the logistical stuff: inputting customer information, keeping the hospital neat and tidy, and processing payments
-
Be the last point of contact and ensuring customers had a good experience and have everything they need
CECs also follow up with customers to make sure we’ve met their needs and look for ways we can make the VEG experience even better. Whether you’re new to veterinary ER or have experience in the field, it’s a great opportunity for anyone looking to build a long-term career in vet med and work with some awesome, quirky people who become like family.
